Terri's Tip of the Week - June 28, 2022

America was not built on fear.  America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. - President Harry S. Truman

The history of free men is never really written by chance but by choice; their choice! - Dwight D. Eisenhower

On Monday, our country will celebrate its independence.  Why is July 4th so important?  In 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 12 out of the 13 original colonies voted to approve the Declaration of Independence.  Each person that voted for independence took a risk and lived a life of courage

Life rewards courage.

The person who is brave enough to bet on something or someone—as long as they avoid irreversible mistakes like running out of cash or going to jail—is in a position to win. – James Clear

ACTION: As we prepare to celebrate our country’s birthday, find something new and unique to do to celebrate our countries independence.

God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless. - Chester W. Nimitz

Hindsight is notably cleverer than foresight.- Chester W. Nimitz

Has the reader ever made a horrible mistake and thought there was no way to recover?  Their career and dreams were doomed forever.

Recently, the author heard a story that amazed her.  There was a man that left high school to start his career in the Navy.  He was an outstanding student in mathematics and graduated with distinction from the Naval Academy being 7th in a class of 114 students.  Additionally, he was an excellent athlete and always had a good attitude.

When he first started his career, he embarked on a journey to the Far East on the USS Ohio.  At that time, it was required by law to accomplish two years of sea duty to become an Ensign.  After accomplishing that, he commanded the USS Panay and then the USS Decatur.  While the Ensign was commanding the USS Decatur in the Philippines, the ship ran aground in a sand bar.  With the assistance of another boat, the USS Decatur was freed from the sand bar.  For the Ensign, he was found guilty of neglect of duty and issued a letter of reprimand.

Most people, would think their career was over after an incident like that.  However, this Ensign did not and returned to work in the Navy working diligently with each duty assignment.  Less than 30 years after that incident and a letter of reprimand forever in his military file, he became a Navy Fleet Admiral and was the United States signer of the surrender terms aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay to end World War II.

Who was this hard-working Naval Officer and Texan?  Chester William Nimitz.

ACTION: Through difficult times that seem hopeless, always remember that you can recover and make a difference in the world.

This flag which we honor and under which we serve is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. - Woodrow Wilson

When we honor our flag, we honor what we stand for as a Nation -- freedom, equality, justice, and hope. – Ronald Reagan

Today marks the 106th anniversary of the creation of Flag Day, which began when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation.

Why was June 14th selected?  According to history.com, the flag was made by Betsy Ross.  She was chosen because she was a struggling local seamstress that had lost 2 husbands in the Revolutionary War.  One day, 3 men showed up at her shop, which were George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross.  During this visit, the men asked her to create a flag that would represent the new country and hopefully bring unity within the country.  Washington provided Betsy Ross a picture of the vision he had for the flag.  She worked diligently on the flag and finished it in less than a month.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress was working on the Articles of Confederation in Philadelphia.  Congress stopped debating and passed a resolution stating that the United States Flag would have 13 stripes interchanging between red and white with 13 white stars surrounded by blue symbolizing a new constellation.

One person had the vision and one person implemented that vision.

How does this relate to goals and dreams?  As we progress toward achieving our goals, the creation of the United States Flag shows that no one can accomplish their goals alone.

ACTION: This week when you see an American flag, remember the story of the creation of the flag and then think of one person you can reconnect with that might be able to assist you with a goal or a dream.

The measure of intelligence is the ability to change. - Albert Einstein

Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything. - George Bernard Shaw

Is the reader open-minded?  As we begin the summer and there may be more time for contemplation and thinking, the author challenges every reader to analyze how open-minded he/she is.

Our country is going through a tough time and everyone has a perspective.  Many times, people will tell their opinion to anyone who will listen.  As someone who is goal-driven and a leader, it is important to be open to calmly listening to different perspectives and be thoughtful in responses.

The reader may ask how being open-minded will be beneficial in leadership development.  According to Presidential IQ, Openness, Intellectual Brilliance, and Leadership: Estimates and Correlations for 42 U.S. Chief Executives, there was one trait that consistently predicted presidential greatness after many control factors.  It was not appearance, friendliness, humor or presentation skills.  The study shows that that the main indicators of greatness was one’s intellectual curiosity and openness to new experiences.  When defining openness, the study defined it as “a cognitive proclivity that encompasses unusual receptiveness to fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas, and values.” (p. 513)

Over the years, the author has always talked about being open to new ideas, places, perspectives.  There is now a study that shows greatness correlates with these recommendations.

ACTION: The author is not suggesting anyone change their morals or values.  However, take time to listen and be open-minded to others perspectives.  Hopefully, the listener will show the same graciousness and listen to what you have to say.

I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time. – Oprah Winfrey

Trying to do it all and expecting that it all can be done exactly right is a recipe for disappointment.  Perfection is the enemy. – Sheryl Sandberg

As the author discussed last week, there is not work/life balance and we need to focus on the seasons of life.  This point was reinforced for the author recently when she was reading Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima.  The entrepreneurship book discusses the ups and downs of building IT Cosmetics.  In the book, Ms. Lima discusses the opportunity she had to ask Meg Whitman a question.  After gaining inner strength, she blurted out a question to Ms. Whitman asking if she worried about her appearance or other things in life.  Her response was “No”.  She continued….

Something has to give.  And something had to give.  With everything in my life, I had to decide what had to give.  I have kids.  And a career.  I couldn’t keep my house the way Martha Stewart would.  Things have to give.  And that wasn’t something I worried about. (pp. 240)

The author would love to say she could do it all, but she knows she cannot.  As the author was researching this topic, she found the below quote:

If I had to embrace a definition of success, it would be that success is making the best choices we can….and accepting them. – Sheryl Sandberg

ACTION: What choices have you made that you now question?  Be content with decisions you made that cannot be changed.  For those opportunities that something can be changed, is this the time to do it?  As we enter summer and a new season, this is the perfect time to make changes in our lives.

Be aware of what season you are in and give yourself the grace to be there. — Kristen Dalton

Balance should be over the course of your life not just in the immediate time frame. – Kennedy (in Everything Will be Okay podcast)

A few years ago, all the rage was work/life balance.  Balancing life and career is not easy.  There are times when balance just cannot occur because work may need to be the focus or there may be a time when family or something else may need to be the focus.  It is not always easy to make these hard decisions and it is wise to have a perspective on how to handle these times.

In John Maxwell’s Minute with Maxwell video on balance, he states:

You have to cooperate with the seasons if you are going to get the most out of them. – John Maxwell

The author is the first to say that going through seasons of life is not easy.  She has wanted certain dreams for many, many years and questions why things have not happened as she dreamed.  During those waiting times, she puts her focus on her career.  After her dreams come true and she looks back, the author will know that the focus on her career in the difficult season of her life was the right thing, but it is difficult in the present to understand.  When the author gets frustrated and does not understand why, the author strives to take the advice of the below quote:

Joy is not a season, it’s a way of living. — Kalley Heiligenthal

ACTION: What season of life are you in?  Would you prefer to be in a different season?  How are you handling it?  What can you do differently to help focus and use this time to prepare for your dream even though other dreams may not be happening?

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - May 17, 2022

Who has self-confidence will lead the rest. – Horace

Put on your big girl panties and deal with it. – J.R. Ward

As the author discussed last week, confidence is important to accomplish dreams and we all have to build our confidence if our dreams are going to come true especially if we desire them to happen sooner rather than later.

Over the career of the author, she has worked in different industries and dealt with many people.  In her current role, she has confidence in many things, but working with one particular individual scared her.  It is not something she has to do often, but she had no choice but to assist this individual for a week.  She had prepared for it, but there was still fear in the author.  On the Monday morning, the author was scared, uncertain of what the week would hold and had butterflies in her stomach.  A couple things happened that first morning and the author handled them smoothly.  As she continued to press forward, she handled each situation as it arose and she survived.  On the last day, the author had to have a direct conversation with the individual to help review materials and she was praised for how the week had gone.  The author overcame her fear and built confidence knowing that when hard things arise to keep pushing forward even when afraid.

She always played it safe.  But now she was ready to fly.  It was a big, bold dream and she was worth it. – Queenisms

ACTION: What areas or individuals have scared you and paralyzed you from moving forward with your dreams?  How are you going to overcome that fear and build confidence this week?

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - May 10, 2022

There is no rule book, no right or wrong; you just have to make it up and do the very best you can to care for your family. - Kate Middleton

Confidence is the most beautiful thing you can possess. – Sabrina Carpenter

One of the hardest things for the author is to have confidence to accomplish her dreams.  As the author as has been contemplating her confidence, she remembered the lady’s business group she led when she lived in Austin, Texas.  The first topic the author discussed was confidence and talked about Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.  She was a commoner who became one of the most famous individuals in the world because of her love for a man and her country.

Many of us have our own confidence issues.  It may not be anything we discuss with others, but most are scared of something and have to overcome that fear.  The author has learned that fear may come on her and she can feel that she is absolutely horrible and cannot do what is in front of her.  However, she knows that the best thing to do is to embrace the experience, learn from it and be prepared for the next time the author has to encounter a similar experience.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do. ― Eleanor Roosevelt, You Learn by Living: Eleven Keys for a More

Next week, the author will discuss how she took her own advice and gained confidence by facing fear head on.

ACTION: What recent experiences have you looked fear in the face and known afterwards that you can handle anything that comes your way?

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - May 3, 2022

When a great moment knocks on the door of your life, it is often no louder than the beating of your heart, and it is very easy to miss it. - Boris Pasternak

It is not often that a man can make opportunities for himself. But he can put himself in such shape that when or if the opportunities comes he is ready. - Theodore Roosevelt

Last week, the author stated that we have to create our own opportunities.  On Tuesday night, she created an opportunity for herself.  The author has stretched herself to meet new people and attend events.  She knows one of the best ways to meet people is through volunteering.

Coach’s Night for the Fort Worth A&M Club was last Tuesday night at Billy Bobs.  The author signed up to volunteer at general admission.  Since there were not many people with general admission tickets, she was transferred to the VIP section.  After helping to register, she asked where her table was to eat dinner as she bought a ticket to participate.  The person she was assisting had a blank look on his face and was not sure where to send the author.  He quickly thought and told her and another volunteer to go sit at a table where people he knew had extra seats.  When the author and her new acquaintance arrived at the table, the author looked up and saw that she was on the front row to hear Texas A&M football coach, Jimbo Fisher.  Talking with the other guests at the table, she met a couple ladies from the Chamber of Commerce where the author may look to buy a home and they are happy to assist her however they can.

Through simply volunteering, the author had new opportunities that she would never have had if she did not volunteered.

ACTION: What opportunities are you involved in or you want to begin doing that could provide new opportunities for you?
