Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - December 8th

The meaning of life is to find your gift.  The purpose of life is to give it away. – Pablo Picasso

If you’re alive, there’s a purpose for your life. – Rick Warren

Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction. – John F. Kennedy

I have always been a goal-oriented person and I have developed my goal setting skills over the years.  However, a number of years ago I heard a speaker discuss a “Life Purpose Statement”.  As I was researching for this blog post, I found the following definition for what a purpose statement is:

“A life purpose statement describes in clear and full detail the reason you exist, why you are here now and how you see your life unfolding” (from Manifest Your Potential website).

Over the last couple of years as I have written my goals, I put my Life Purpose Statement at the top and write my goals below.  Before I type a goal, I review my Life Purpose Statement and verify that by completing that goal I will be accomplishing my Life Purpose.  If not, the goal will not be added to my list.

As I was typing up this blog post, I thought about my Life Purpose Statement and the goals I create for myself each year.  My challenge was my fitness goal.  How do my fitness goals help me accomplish my Life Purpose Statement?  Thinking about it, I realized that if I do not feel good I will not be able to accomplish the other goals I establish for myself.  Everything encompasses the PURPOSE I am on this planet for.

After you have reviewed your Life Purpose Statement, start thinking about your 2016 goals.  When writing them, I suggest you divide your goals into what I call the “6 F’s”.  The categories are:

1.       Faith
2.       Family
3.       Friends
4.       Finances
5.       Future
6.    Fitness

Having categories, helps you divide up your goals and makes it easy to review your goals daily, monthly, quarterly to see progress and areas to work on.

This week, continue to think about your 2016 goals.  Remember that by having a roadmap you will have a path to accomplish your Life Purpose.

Next week, Terri’s Tip will discuss writing SMART goals.

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - December 1st

Don’t just meet your goals DESTROY THEM! - http://iheartinspiration.com/quotes/destroy-goals/

When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. - Confucius

We are 31 days from 2016…WOW!  I truly cannot believe we are this close to a new year.  For me, it has been a great, fast, amazing year and truly not what I imaged.  IT WAS BETTER!!!

With the end of the year fast approaching, it is a great time to review our progress on 2015 goals and start planning for 2016.

When I started thinking about my 2015 goals, I knew that I had accomplished many of them because I had reviewed them regularly and tweaked them quarterly based on my life situations.  Each one of us can plan and set goals, but there is an element of uncertainty in life that we cannot plan for and must prepare ourselves to handle it as life comes along.

How did you do in accomplishing your goals?  For me, there are certain goals that are out of my control and did not happen this year, but I can assure you that certain events did occur this year that got me closer to that ultimate goal and I will continue to have patience in the coming year.  In other areas, I “ran” right past my running goal and perused through my reading goals.

CONGRATULATIONS on accomplishing the goals you did attain!

Even with my successes, there were still goals I did not accomplish.  How about you?  Remember there are still 31 days to work on accomplishing the unachieved goals!

When you sorted through your unattained goals, what conclusions did you come to about why you did not accomplish the goal?  Was the goal out of your control or was it something you just did not do?  If it was something that you just did not do, why?  For me, I can honestly say that the one major goal that I had control over and I did not accomplish was because of fear.  In my mind, I wondered all year “If I do this goal, what will happen?”  Most likely, my life would have been more amazing and it is my fault I did not do it.

The conundrum now is will I include that goal for 2016 or will I discard it?  For me, the answer is YES!  The goal is not hard, but will take persistence and determination because it is definitely something outside my comfort zone that I believe will make a difference in my life.
What about you?  Will you take your unfinished 2015 goals and include them in your 2016 goals?  When thinking about this, review the reasons why you did not accomplish it.  Was it something in your control or was there a life change that now indicates that it is not beneficial to have the goal?

Next week, we will review our life purposes and the main areas to set goals for ourselves.  As you ponder 2015 and start thinking about 2016, plan for it to be an exceedingly more amazing year!  AIM HIGH!!!

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - November 24th

We don’t remember days, we remember moments. – Cesare Pavese

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. – Dr. Seuss

One of the best memories I have of my grandfather was calling him on Veteran’s Day in 2005 and telling him “Thank You for serving our Great Country!”  Sixteen days later my grandfather passed away, but I will always have the memory that I told him thank you for giving me my freedom!

Last week, I created another memory that will forever mean so much to me.  On Thursday, I boarded a plane with my sister, mother and father and flew to Nashville, Tennessee.  My dad had asked that we go back as a family to see all of the Christmas decorations at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.  During the trip, we toured the hotel, participated in the Grand Old Opry at the Ryman Auditorium, attended Midnight Yell Practice for Texas A&M Football, etc.  One of the best memories from this trip will be a moment I had with my dad.  My mom and sister were still asleep when my dad and I went for coffee.  The first coffee shop we went to was completely swamped with people so I took my dad on a “tour” of the hotel to find another coffee shop, which took us 30 minutes to find.  After purchasing our coffee, we found a bench outside in the brisk cool air of Nashville and talked politics.  During the conversation about the presidential race, the topic of leadership came up and my dad asked me, “Terri, what is leadership?”  I had been thinking about this topic for a while and when he asked me it challenged me even more and we discussed both of our perspectives.  This trip was a great family adventure, but this moment with my dad is probably the most memorable and will mean the most to me.

As we are going into the holidays and will be spending time with family, take time to have those special moments.  Things and people will come and go from our life, but those special memories will last forever!

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. - Kevin Arnold
