Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - March 22, 2022

Regardless of our titles or years of experience, we can learn from each other. Through mentoring and by being open to learn where we can reach our ultimate potential. –Lily Benjamin

Don’t listen to what people say.  Watch what they do. – picture quotes.com

Last week, the author talked about mentoring in mainly a professional setting.  Now, let’s look at it from the personal perspective.  When the author returned to Texas, she immediately started attending different groups so that she could meet people.  One specific place she has meet people is at her church.  Previously, she had volunteered at a church and met great people so she started weekly serving again.  Through this, she has met great ladies that she is learning from based on their personal lives and even some of them in a professional setting.

The reader might ask how are these individuals mentoring the author.  These “mentors” are a diverse mixture of married and single individuals from all walks of life that have lived different stories and many of them have families.  The author is intentional in gaining wisdom of how they have lived life as working women, with their children and their relationships with their spouses.  One of the ladies has a great husband that has become an acquaintance to the author because his sense of humor is wonderful.  From these different individuals, the author is preparing for growth and new opportunities in her personal life.

For these situations, there is not a monthly coffee where the author asks questions.  She watches how each of these individuals live their lives and incorporates traits that she sees into her life.

I no longer listen to what people say, I just watch what they do.  Behavior never lies. – Winston Churchill

ACTION: This week, take time to see who in your personal life is a mentor.  How do you intentionally gain wisdom from these individuals that you are able to incorporate into your life?

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - March 15, 2022

A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. — Oprah Winfrey

A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you. — Bob Proctor

According to “The Three Types of Mentors Every Person Needs to Help Them Grow” by John Maxwell , a mentor “teaches, guides and lifts you up by virtue of his or her experience and insight”.  As the author thought about the many mentors in her life, she thought about the various men and women she had conversations with leading up to her move to DC and during her time there.  She talked with people that worked on Capitol Hill, different federal agencies, the military, businesses that interacted with The Hill, etc.  During those conversations, she would try to have one solid question to start the conversation and then would ask additional questions as the conversation proceeded.  Additionally, she had done her research on those individuals she specifically asked to meet with so that she would understand their background to make sure she asked questions relevant to them.  Moreover, the author would focus on topics that she was targeting to learn about.  Sometimes it would be research into how DC worked, other times she focused on leadership or how the individuals she was talking to pursued their goals even with the twist and turns of one’s career.

Many times, the author would be mentored in group conversations and other times mentoring occurred in an individual conversation with someone at coffee, lunch or dinner.  For the author, there is no “perfect” way to have a mentoring session.  The goal is to grow through experiences of other people.

ACTION: In your professional life, review your acquaintances and contacts to determine who you would like to ask to have coffee with and make the request.  Once the meeting is on the calendar, prepare to talk with the person to ensure you are prepared and it is a good use of the mentor’s time.

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - March 8, 2022

A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. - John Wooden

Who, exactly, seeks out a coach? If you ask a coach the answer is usually the same: Winners who want even more out of life. - Abigail Pickus, 2000

As the reader was contemplating if they needed a coach in this season of their life or if they needed a mentor, what was the decision?  When the author thought about her current situation, she laughed because she is going to have both a coach and mentors.

This will not be the first time the author had a coach.  During a tough time at work, the author sought out resources that provided her a coach as she was developing as a supervisor.  Also, she was encountering touch situations with management and decided she needed an outside source to give an unbiased opinion.  For the author, she needed the individual that would stand up to her and tell her the situation was not her fault.  The author provided real life situations to the coach and they discussed options and pros and cons to each one.  As mentioned last week, the coach rarely mentioned her personal situation and consistently worked to develop the author.

Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is more often helping them to learn rather than teaching them. - John Whitmore, author and founder of the GROW model of coaching, Coaching for Performance, 2010

ACTION: Research this week coaching options in your local area or at your workplace to see if this might be a good opportunity to help you grow.  The author is using a resource that is free through her place of employment.

Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - March 1, 2022

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled. - Plutarch

I am not a teacher, but an awakener. - Robert Frost

Over the last two months, Terri’s Tuesday Tip of the Week has discussed different ways to be more productive in life.  Now that there is more time in the day, it is time to think about how to use that time in 2022.

The author suggests that the reader take this opportunity for growth.  Over the years, the author has talked about reading, ways to learn, etc.  During the coming weeks, the author will discuss news ideas for growth and some recent lessons she learned.  For this growth, the author will be focusing on how other people will be able to assist in this growth.

A mentor is a more experienced individual willing to share knowledge with someone less experienced in a relationship of mutual trust. – David Clutterbuc

First, let’s discuss the difference between mentoring and coaching.  Both of these options provide an opportunity for self-improvement and provide a safe environment to share personal experiences.  Mentoring is usually advice on how the mentor navigated experiences and accomplished their dreams and goals.  Often times, mentoring can be reversed and the mentee teaches and imparts knowledge into the mentor.  In contrast, coaching focuses on the development of skills and tailored to the needs of the client.  There is not two-way growth.  Coaches focus on developing their clients.

Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.’ – John Whitmore, in Coaching for Performance

ACTION: This week, take time to determine if you want a mentor or a coach to help propel you to accomplish your dreams and goals in 2022.
