Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - October 25, 2022

If you have answers to the "whys", it will direct you to the "hows". As simple as that! — Israelmore Ayivor

As long as you remember the whys, the hows will take care of themselves. — Richard Paul Evans

How is everyone enjoying their new activity/task/dream?  The author can say that she is going to enjoy hers and it will also be a challenge.

As the author has said before, we will all have problems to solve and need to strategically solve them.  These problems will potentially be pesky little issues that will require the reader to lead a team to cut through the muck and mire to discover the underlying cause(s).  In the last couple of months, the author learned a new root cause analysis process that will be very beneficial to readers.

In the 1930s, Sakichi Toyoda, a Japanese industrialist and founder of Toyota Industries, developed the 5 whys technique.  This technique became very popular in the 1970s and is still used today to solve problems at Toyota.

The author has been very open about her desire to understand why and she loves this technique.  Since the author desires to have a broad knowledge and does not specialize in specific topics, she is always looking for new information to understand problems/processes, etc. so she makes the best decisions.  5 whys is great for the author because the intent of the technique is to develop that in-depth understanding of what is happening at all levels of a decision to help grasp the most complete understanding of the situation.

5 whys is straightforward and simple.  It will be very helpful in quickly solving any problems that arise as the reader works on their activity/task/dream.  When a problem arises, the reader should drill down to the origin of the problem by asking "Why?" five times.  When a counter-measure becomes apparent to the problem, the reader will implement the solution to prevent the issue from recurring.

Resources below provide more knowledge and examples of how to implement the 5 whys technique in everyday situations.

ACTION:  This week when a problem arises, use the 5 whys technique to drill down to the root cause of the problem.  The information learned will help solve that particular issue and hopefully others.
