Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - October 11, 2022

Has the reader ever completed a running event such as a 5k, 10k or a marathon?  What about an iron-man, which is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run?  What about completing a double-iron man?

 The author has run a marathon (26.2 miles) and is currently training for the Navy 5-Miler in Fort Worth.  However, she has never consider completing an iron-man.  Recently, the author heard the story of a man that completed 6 double iron-mans in his 50s.  That is running 4.8 miles, a 224 bike ride and 52.4 miles run each time he competed.  Dr. James Gills completed this astonishing feat and he discussed how he did it:

 

I’ve learned to talk to myself instead of listen to myself.  If I listen to myself I hear all the reasons why I should give up. I hear that I’m too tired-too old-too weak to make it. But if I talk to myself I can give myself the encouragement and words I need to hear to keep running and finish the race. (happylawmom.com)

 As the reader and the author have taken on new goals/dreams/tasks before the end of the year, there are a lot of competing thoughts in one’s mind as they work toward completing the dream.  As Dr. Gills said, we each have to talk to ourselves to encourage ourselves to accomplish it.  Others may say it is not possible, but we have to stay positive and adamant about completion. 

  

ACTION: Start each day deliberately telling yourself encouraging words and thoughts.  By saying them, you will retrain your old default thoughts with new encouraging thoughts.
