Terri's Tuesday Tip of the Week - November 8th

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.  – Dr. Suess

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. – George Bernhard Shaw

Last week, I started a series on creating a “personal brand”.  I talked about why it is important and provided the first letter of our B-R-A-N-D acronym, which was Be Yourself and Be Intent.  This week, the letter “R” stands for “review your values, purpose, dreams, goals, talents and passions and determine your ‘product’”.

Over the years that I have been writing Terri’s Tuesday Tip of the Week, I have talked about personal purpose statements, vision, dreams, dreams boards, goals, actions steps to complete your goals and various other topics to help readers.  With all of the dreaming, data collection and research that you have already accomplished, creating your action plan should be easy and allow you to determine your product.
Socrates said it best, “To find yourself, think for yourself”.

Here are 5 action steps to help you determine/define your “product”:

  1. Review your personal purpose statement and vision.
  2. Research!!!  Look at people that have accomplished what you want to do.  What things did they do well and what things did they do not so well?  Who are your current competitors and how have they branded themselves?
  3. Determine what you want your personal brand to tell people.  What do you want people to think of when they think of you?  What words do you want to come to someone’s mind when someone says your name?  What do you want your niche in your industry to be?
  4. Analyze how people currently see you.  How big is the gap between where you currently are and where you want to be?  What changes do you need to incorporate and why?
  5. Develop your strategic plan to create your personal brand.  Include your social media image, attire, hair, verbal and non-verbal communication, etc.

When you are looking to find someone that has created a personal brand around themselves, one author I read suggested researching Richard Branson.  When I searched the web, Wikipedia defined him simply as an “Organization Leader”.  To me, that is a great personal brand and encompasses everything he has accomplished through the various business he has started.

CHALLENGE: Over the next week, create time in your schedule to do research and start your strategic plan to create your “product”.  Next week, I will start talking about how to “advertise” your product (yourself) including social media, attire, business cards, etc.

Resources

Please note that I am including all resources that I use for the personal branding series each week to assist the reader in the creation of the personal brand.
